Kenya-Rwanda Relations
- Kenya and Rwanda established diplomatic relations in 1965. Kenya opened its mission in Rwanda in 1986 but temporarily closed it in 1994 due to genocide. The High Commission was reopened in 2001.
- Kenya and Rwanda signed the first General Agreement of Cooperation in 1979. Since then Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) have been held. Under the framework, the two countries have signed several Memoranda of Understanding in the following areas: Air Transport, Education, Agriculture & Livestock, Water & Irrigation Management, Cooperatives Development, Security & Governance, Civil Service, Immigration, Cooperation in the field of Correctional Services, Justice & Constitutional Affairs.
- Kenya’s relations with Rwanda are warm and cordial. The two countries relations are not only historical but are defined by the indispensable need to work together within the spirit of the EAC for mutual benefit of the region
- Several Kenyan companies have invested in Rwanda, in various sectors, ranging from the banking, Construction, Insurance, Aviation, Education, Agribusiness, tourism and hospitality.
- Over 6,000 Kenyans are living and working in Rwanda, represented by a strong umbrella body, the Association of Kenyans in Rwanda (AKR).
